March 15, 2014 Discover the Irish in Gettysburg
The Inns of the Gettysburg Area (IGA) bed and breakfast association is offering an Irish tour, luncheon, and Irish music in honor of the Irish troops who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. The event takes place on on March 15, 2014 starting with a Battlefield tour at 10 AM at the Gettysburg National Military Park.
Walk in the footsteps of the Irish Brigade as Licensed Battlefield Guide Rich Kohr leads guests across the Wheatfield from the Father Corby statue to the Irish Brigade Monument. Hear the stories of these brave Union Soldiers who endured some of the most intense fighting during the battle. The Wheatfield changed hands up to six times during the battle, and was the scene of much action.
After your tour, you will gather at the Historic Fairfield Inn for an Irish luncheon featuring Shepherd’s Pie or Corned Beef & Cabbage. With origins dating to 1757, The Fairfield Inn is one of America’s oldest continuously operating inns.
Local band “Across the Pond” will entertain guests with Celtic music during the luncheon. After lunch, guests will enjoy an Irish concert. Michael Morrison, Chuck Krepley and Dan Diviney play a variety of traditional folk music from Ireland and Scotland. Their music is acoustically woven on fiddle, guitar, flute, whistles, mandolin and bodhran. From slow haunting airs, love songs and ballads, hard driving songs, and fast jigs and reels, Across the Pond plays the music with emotion and conviction. The music spans centuries of oppression, from the work of O’Carolan and others in the 17th and 18th to contemporary pieces, all which can be heard in the pubs if Ireland and Scotland today. Their music is very traditional but has a modern edge to it. It is high energy, fresh & entertaining.
